Born in New Jersey, Maria Pia Marrella earned a BA from Marymount College of Fordham University in Studio Art and Art Education and a MFA from Parsons School of Design. While at Parsons, she studied with Leland Bell and Paul Resika and continued her formalist training at the New York Studio School. 

Marrella has widely exhibited her works in New York City  
and the metropolitan area for over 35 years and has taught 
Visual Arts in various institutions, colleges and high schools. She also has experience in Art Direction in film digital and
print media.

 

Her paintings and drawings take multiple directions - from figurative narratives to abstract compositions that encompass her interests in observation, primitive art, cartooning 
and mythology.


Her solo exhibition, "Distopia", was shown at Buster Levi Gallery in July, 2017. Check out 5 minute award winning documentary on the genesis of the work.
